Speech production

Articulation is the development of speech sounds.  Children develop sounds at different rates.  The chart to the left is a general guideline of when certain sounds are usually mastered by most children.  This chart depicts a range of development and should only be used as a general guide.

Below are some basic tips to help you work with your child at home.  I posted the sounds that most of my students are working on right now. You can practice speech sounds while looking in a mirror if your child has difficulty putting their tongue, teeth and/or lips in the right place.

Practice, Practice, Practice!!
K and G     -    open your mouth and hold  your tongue tip down so only the back of your tongue goes up for this sound.
S and Z     -     make sure the tiger stays in the cage!    Don't let the tongue stick out, keep teeth closed and tongue behind the bottom front teeth.
L       -       make sure your tongue gets up to "the spot" behind your top front teeth!  Open your mouth and SMILE!      Don't round your lips.
F      -     bite your bottom lip with your top teeth and gently blow air out.
R     -      get your tongue  up, back, tight.  Your lips should curl when saying this sound correctly.  Try words like "shirt" and "church" to help with /r/ vowels (ir, er, ur)
TH     -     bite your tongue tip gently with your teeth- make sure your tongue sticks out and gently blow air out over your tongue.
SH    -     almost like the /s/ sound, but your tongue should almost touch the roof of your mouth.   Round your lips like a fish!
CH     -     the train sound!    Almost like /sh/ and /t/ sounds combined.    Round your lips like a fish and make sure there is a quick burst of air.
